Angel Communication Isn’t What I Thought
What Working with Angels Really Looks Like
Angels were always present in my life. I grew up as a Methodist child attending a Catholic school, went to a Lutheran college, and have a Presbyterian minister for a stepfather. Between all these traditions, angels were woven into the fabric of my spiritual understanding from the very beginning.
In Catholic school, angels and archangels were part of the everyday. Catholics believe that everyone has a guardian angel. Protestant denominations don’t emphasize angels as much, but we knew they were there through —watching, protecting, guiding.
I know now that not only do we have a guardian angel, we are able to communicate with angels of all ranks if we desire it.
Angels as Protection
One cold Iowa morning, I was driving my little red Honda Civic to an early choir practice. It was my first winter using my shiny new driver’s license. I was listening to some music, warming up my voice. Suddenly, the red brake lights of the car ahead of me turned on. Instead of pumping the brakes (like I should have), I slammed my 16 year old foot down HARD. My car started slipping on what I now know was black ice. I felt completely out of control—there was no way to avoid a collision, and I turned the wheel, causing my vehicle to slide into an out-of-control spin. I remember crying out for help. I don’t remember if I addressed Jesus, God, or the Angels, but I do know what happened next. It felt like a giant hand came down and gently pointed the nose of my Honda Civic back into the proper direction. I did not continue to spin. I did not hit anybody. Nobody hit me. The car straightened out and I was able to carefully continue my drive—shaken and in a little bit of shock, but not upset. I felt the most comforting presence surrounding me in that moment, and I KNEW I had experienced divine intervention.
Many years later, as I quietly rocked my first child, I looked into her sweet, perfect face and wondered what I had done to deserve such a gift. I again KNEW that she had been entrusted to me to protect and raise. I quietly, without pomp and circumstance, devoted the rest of my life to serving the gift-giver—God/Creator/Universe/Universe. There was no going back. I got up from that rocking chair with a purpose for my life.
As I matured and learned more about my own spirituality and how it interacted with organized religions I’d experienced, I started exploring angel communication more intentionally. I would go to get angel card readings from a local practitioner. She would have me ask a question and then she would draw a spread of angel cards, and there would be an interpretation that she would give. It was always gentle, supportive, and fun. It was through her that I learned that Jesus Christ is actually on my team of spiritual advisors—he’s on a lot of people’s teams of spiritual advisors. I also learned that I would be working with Archangel Michael because he was the guardian and protector of children, which resonated deeply for me as a teacher.
It was a soft, easy way to start exploring a bigger-than-the-Bible spirituality. Angels are in the Bible by name, but angels are more than the Bible. Angels are present across nearly every spiritual tradition on earth—in Islam they’re called Malaikah and are created from light; in Hinduism and Buddhism they’re known as Devas, celestial beings who guide and protect; in Zoroastrianism, Judaism, and countless indigenous traditions, beings of light serve as messengers between the human and divine realms. Different names, different forms, but the same truth: we are surrounded by helpers who guide, protect, and serve.
When I Started the Wisdom Studies, Everything Changed
Once I began studying the Ancient Wisdom lessons, I no longer had to have someone else translate for me through a card deck. I was empowered to listen and receive wisdom on my own. The angels weren’t speaking through an intermediary anymore—they were speaking directly to me.
When I found the Good Knight Network and started the Wisdom Studies, I was asked to meditate on a list of numbers. The number that came forward to me was 57. According to the list that Sophia West had given us, number 57 represented the Archangel Barakiel.
Barakiel—the Archangel of abundance, thunder, and lightning—had assigned himself to work with me. He’s also known as the chief of ALL the guardian angels, which means he oversees the angels watching over every person on earth. His name literally means “God’s Blessings,” and he’s considered the prince of abundance, bringing good fortune, prosperity, and unexpected miracles. In sacred texts like the Third Book of Enoch, he’s described as commanding 496,000 ministering angels.
What Angel Communication Actually Looks Like
A lot of angel communication is prayer. There’s not a specific way to pray. You can just get quiet, centered, and then talk to God and the angels like you’re speaking to yourself. I experience messages from the angels coming through to me as well- in my mind and in my heart.
I am now able to discern different angels by the energy that is carried with the thought that I hear in my head. But at first, I asked them to be very clear so that I knew it was them talking and not just my imagination. Barakiel has a sense of humor and decided to speak like a pirate in my mind. Therefore, it was very clear as to when I was getting a message or a nudge from his frequency.
Now, anytime a thought flips across my mind that is unprompted, or an answer to another direct thought that I was thinking, or a question I was wondering in my mind, I know it’s a message from my angels. I’ve learned to listen. I’ve learned to feel into the direction. I know that angels are always carrying the frequency of love, and so I feel one hundred percent protected and safe when I feel that frequency. They would never ask me to do anything that would harm myself or others. They never use false flattery or my ego as a tool to manipulate. They honor my sovereignty and free will (although sometimes I’ll get a message over and over again if it is really important).
The “Go-Fer” Phase
When I first began talking to angels, I would use them a little bit like go-fers.
I have travel angels that help my travel days go smoothly and help me experience all kinds of unexpected upgrades during my adventures. I like to ask that my trips go as I plan or better, and they always do. I have parking angels that I ask to save me the best parking spots when I’m running late or if it’s a really cold day in Minnesota and I don’t want to walk to the movie theater in -20°. The spots are always available, and I always make sure to thank my angels when I notice that a job has come through that they have delivered for me.
I make sure that I acknowledge the messages that I hear, sometimes even saying out loud, “I hear you and I will get to that.”
Sometimes I experience ringing in my ears. The frequencies were trying to communicate, but I could not understand what they were trying to say. By simply telling them that, and asking them to lower their frequency, the ringing would stop and the messages could come through.

Angel communication isn’t mysterious or reserved for the specially gifted. It’s your birthright. It’s a conversation that’s been waiting for you to join.
